Genuine is a free dating app for adults. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, who can see it, and how you can see, change or delete it. In this policy, “Genuine”, “we” and “us” mean the developer who runs the app, an individual based in Israel.
Questions or requests: privacy@genuinemeet.com.
1. Adults only
Genuine is only for people aged 18 or over. We ask for your birth date when you sign up and refuse anyone under 18. If you believe someone on Genuine is under 18, report them in the app with “Might be under 18” and we will review it first.
2. What we collect
Account
- If you sign in with Apple or Google: an identifier from that service and the email address it shares with us. Apple lets you hide your email; we then receive a private relay address.
- If you sign up with email: your email address and a password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider).
Profile
- Your first name, birth date, gender and the gender(s) you are interested in.
- Photos you upload. Location and other hidden data inside photo files (EXIF, GPS) are removed on our server before a photo is stored.
- What you write and choose: bio, prompt answers, work, education, languages, lifestyle answers, questionnaire answers and the partner preferences you set.
Sensitive information, only if you choose
- Your gender and who you are interested in can reveal your sexual orientation. They are private by default; you choose whether to show them on your profile. Because profiles are shown only to compatible members, someone who is shown your profile can infer that you are interested in their gender.
- The “Religion and tradition” answer and Shabbat and holidays mode are optional and never part of sign-up. We ask for your explicit consent before collecting them, and you can delete them, and withdraw that consent, at any time in the app.
Location
- If you allow location access, the app sends your location only while you use it, never in the background. Our server rounds it to a grid of about 1 km before storing it. You can instead pick an area manually; location access is never required.
Activity in the app
- Likes, matches, messages, reactions and date invitations.
- For “Next Step”: the Instagram handle or WhatsApp number you choose to share with a match. It is encrypted when stored.
- Blocks and reports you make or receive.
Device and technical data
- A push notification token, if you allow notifications, and your notification settings.
- Records of actions such as likes, messages and location changes, used to enforce limits that prevent abuse.
- Your More time setting for exam season: whether it is on. It only changes how long you have to reply, and no other member sees it.
- Basic technical logs that our hosting providers keep to run and secure the service. The app itself does not log the content of your messages or your contact details.
What we don’t do: no advertising, no advertising or analytics trackers in the app, no selling or renting of your information, and no use of your information for anything unrelated to running Genuine.
3. How we use it
- To run your account and show your profile to members you are compatible with (based on gender, who you are interested in, age and distance).
- To order who you see, using the answers others have chosen to share and the preferences you set. Nobody is hidden because of a “dealbreaker”; it is only marked for you.
- To deliver messages and notifications, and to send account emails such as sign-up confirmation and password reset.
- To keep members safe: filtering offensive words, enforcing rate limits, and reviewing reports. When a conversation is reported, a moderator can read it to decide what to do.
Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on: providing the service you asked for (your account and matches); your consent (sensitive answers, location access and notifications, each of which you can withdraw); and our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe and preventing abuse.
4. What other members can see
| Visible to members you are compatible with | Never visible to other members |
|---|---|
| Your first name, age, photos and the profile answers you choose to show; a rounded distance (never below 1 km). | Your birth date, exact location, email, the answers you keep private, your Shabbat and holidays mode and exam season setting, and whom you have blocked or reported. |
Your Instagram handle or WhatsApp number is shown to a match only after you both choose to share and each of you confirms the exact details.
After a block or a report, the other person loses access to your photos and profile at once. If you let a waiting match go, they keep access until their side of it closes, usually within about three days. A conversation that ran out of time stays readable, with both profiles, for both of you; block or report to close it.
5. Service providers
We use these providers to run Genuine. They process information only on our behalf and under their own security and privacy terms:
- Supabase: database, sign-in, photo storage and server functions.
- Apple and Google: sign-in, if you choose them, and delivery of push notifications to your device.
- Expo: passes push notifications on to Apple and Google. A message notification includes the sender’s first name and, unless you turn previews off, the start of the message. It never names someone you have reported.
- GIPHY: GIF search, when GIFs are available in the app. Our server sends it your search words, and your device loads the GIFs from GIPHY, which sees your device’s IP address.
- Resend: sends account emails.
- Cloudflare: this website, our domain and our email forwarding.
These providers may process information outside Israel, including in the European Union and the United States. We share information with authorities only when the law requires it or when needed to protect someone’s safety.
6. How long we keep it
- We keep your information while your account exists. Some data, such as a match’s waiting-room entry, is removed automatically after a short time.
- When you delete your account, we delete your profile, photos, answers, likes, matches, messages and contact details. Reports are kept, with your identity removed from them, so that safety decisions remain on record.
- Copies may remain in our providers’ backups for a limited time before they are overwritten.
7. Security
Information is encrypted in transit. Photos are stored privately, and our server checks on every request that the signed-in member asking is allowed to see them. Contact details are encrypted at rest. Every access check runs on our server, not only in the app. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
8. Your choices and rights
- See and change your profile and answers at any time in the app.
- Withdraw consent for sensitive answers, location or notifications in the app or in your phone’s settings.
- Delete your account in the app under Profile › Settings › Delete account. More options are on our account deletion page.
- Request a copy of your information, or ask any other privacy question, by emailing privacy@genuinemeet.com. We will confirm the request with the email address on your account before acting on it, and answer within 30 days.
- Complain to Israel’s Privacy Protection Authority, or, if you are in the European Union, to your local data protection authority.
9. Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and tell you in the app before a significant change takes effect.
